OFW, P.C. Authors Avian Influenza Primer

In response to industry questions concerning the impact of avian influenza on American food companies, “Avian Influenza (AI)—A Primer on the Safety, Regulations and Policies” was authored by OFW, P.C. The Primer is available from The Food Institute and focuses on the science, regulations, and policies related to avian influenza. Specifically, the Primer discusses issues such as:

  • How will avian influenza affect U.S. businesses?
  • What are the health concerns related to avian influenza?
  • What controls are in place to prevent future U.S. outbreaks?
  • What measures will be taken should future U.S. outbreaks occur?

In addition, the Primer includes a discussion about pandemics, the safety of eating poultry, and the World Health Organization's response to avian influenza.

In total, 98 deaths and 177 illnesses have been attributed to avian influenza outbreaks in Asia and Turkey since 2003. Avian influenza has not yet mutated into a human-transmittable form; however, the United States is taking precautionary measures to prepare for such a phenomenon. The food industry, in particular, should be prepared to respond to public inquiries regarding avian influenza and its impact on food safety.
