Olsson Frank Weeda, P.C. Authors Guide on Importing Food into the U.S.

Olsson Frank Weeda, P.C. has written a guide that explains the regulatory requirements involved in importing food into the United States. As public concern about the safety of imported foods grows, it will be increasingly important that all those who depend on imports of foods and food ingredients are aware of, and comply with, legal requirements. The Guide is available from The Food Institute.

“Importing Food Into the United States: A Regulatory Guide” is intended as a resource for firms that need a handy summary of the federal agencies with jurisdiction over food imports and the laws, regulations, and policies they enforce.

The Guide covers such issues as:

  • Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and Bureau of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) procedures at the port of entry
  • FDA requirements for registration of overseas facilities, prior notice of food imports, and recordkeeping
  • The jurisdiction and requirements of the different agencies within USDA (e.g., the Food Safety and Inspection Agency, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency, and Agricultural Marketing Service)
  • Special import requirements for particular foods, such as milk and juice
  • Special programs to speed entry of food imports
  • Customs duties, tariffs, and quotas

The Guide includes advice on how to avoid problems at the port of entry, as well as useful government websites where the most up-to-date information can be found such as the latest FDA Import Alerts.
