Practice Area Overview

Animal Feed and Drug

Animal feed and animal drug products are regulated under the same federal and state food and drug statutes that regulate foods and drugs for human use, but with important distinctions reflecting the manner in which they are used with food producing and companion animals. At Olsson Frank Weeda, our attorneys have years of experience helping clients with animal feed, pet food, medicated feed, and animal nutrition products and ingredients regulated by both FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) and state feed control agencies. Our expertise also includes advice on animal drugs, as well as on animal biologics regulated by USDA.

We are a leader in assisting clients to advocate for improvements in CVM regulation of the marketing and promotion of pet foods, animal feeds, and animal dietary supplements. Our attorneys have extensive experience with state requirements and the complex relationships among FDA, the states, and the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) that affect the labeling and marketing of our clients' products.

We have assisted clients with their animal drug applications, as well as with the many issues that arise after approval, including compliance, current good manufacturing practices (CGMPs), labeling and advertising, promotion, recalls and other market withdrawals, and enforcement actions.
