Ken Ackerman’s Newest Book, TROTSKY IN NEW YORK, 1917, Set for Release in September 2016

Trotsky 2This week, Counterpoint Press announced the release of the newest book by OFW Law’s own Ken Ackerman called TROTSKY IN NEW YORK, 1917: A Radical on the Eve of Revolution.

Far afield from agriculture and crop insurance — Ken’s usual specialties at OFW Law — this is Ken’s latest entry in a prolific writing career focused on American history that has covered subjects as diverse as J. Edgar Hoover (YOUNG J. EDGAR), New York’s BOSS TWEED, President James Garfield (DARK HORSE), and Gilded Age financiers Jim Fisk and Jay Gould (THE GOLD RING).

Ken’s critically-acclaimed BOSS TWEED was a New York Times Notable book when it came out in in 2005 and received major review coverage in the New York Times book Review and Washington Post’s Book World.  His gripping account of the 1881 assassination of President James A. Garfield was featured on C-SPAN “Booknotes,” NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and PBS’s “American Experience.”  Regarding his new book on Leon Trotsky, Kirkus Reviews recently described it this way:

“In boisterous prose well-matched to his topic, the author convincingly evokes the social ferment of New York’s huge immigrant community: polyglot, united in hatred of the czarist government, and receptive to socialism but arguing endlessly and urgently about political theory and strategy. Ackerman succeeds in presenting Trotsky’s little-known weeks in New York as an absorbing adventure, though much greater adventures lay ahead.  An entertaining and informative account of a footnote to the life of one of the 20th century’s most charismatic leaders.”

Prior to joining OFW Law in 2001, Ken served as Administrator of USDA’s Federal crop insurance program for seven years.  Before that, he served as legal counsel to two different committees of the United States Senate: Governmental Affairs in the 1970s, under then-Ranking Republican Charles Percy (D.-Ill.), and Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry in the last 1980s and early 1990s, under then-chairman Patrick Leahy (D.-Vt.).

Ken will kick off his new book’s release with an event at Washington, D.C.’s “Busboys and Poets” on Tuesday night, September 13.   The book will be available on Amazon.com shortly after Labor Day.
