We are pleased to announce that Dr. Betsy L. Booren, who specializes in food safety policy development and analysis, has joined OFW Law as Senior Policy Advisor. Most recently, Dr. Booren served as Vice President of Scientific Affairs for the North American Meat Institute, where she represented and provided informed analysis for the majority of the U.S. beef, pork, lamb, veal, and turkey packers and processors on a variety of issues including food safety, human nutrition, animal health, biotechnology, food quality and processing, new technologies and public health initiatives. She previously served in the same role at the American Meat Institute, which she joined in January 2009.
In addition, Dr. Booren was appointed in January 2015 as President of the Foundation for Meat and Poultry Research and Education in Washington, D.C. In this role, Dr. Booren provided leadership in developing industry research priorities in food safety and human nutrition. She also worked with industry partners to secure funding and develop relevant education opportunities. Dr. Booren had previously provided scientific leadership in the AMI Foundation since 2009.
Dr. Booren currently sits on the USDA’s National Advisory Committee on Meat and Poultry Inspection. She is an active member of the International Association for Food Protection, Institute of Food Technologists, American Society for Nutrition and American Meat Science Association, where she served on the Board of Directors.
Dr. Booren earned a bachelor of science from Michigan State University, a master of science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
